The Los Angeles Zoo in San Fernando Valley
The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a zoo in the Griffith Park area of Los Angeles, California. The 133-acre site is home to more than 1,100 animals from around the world, as well as a botanical collection comprising more than 7,000 different plant species. A major redevelopment of the zoo was completed in 2010.
The zoo first opened in 1966 and was originally known as the Griffith Park Zoo. In 1978, the zoo underwent a $5 million renovation and expansion project that nearly doubled its size. In 1984, the zoo was officially renamed the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. The name change was made to reflect the zoo’s increasing emphasis on conservation and education. In 1988, another expansion project added an additional 8 acres to the zoo. This expansion included a new Giraffe Exhibit, as well as an African Savannah Exhibit.
In 2003, the zoo embarked on a $72 million master plan redevelopment project that would completely transform its appearance and facilities. The first phase of this project was completed in 2006 with the opening of the Elephants of Asia Exhibit. The second phase was completed in 2010 with the opening of Wonders of the African Forest. This phase also included the construction of a new Entry Plaza, as well as an expanded parking lot.
The third and final phase of the redevelopment project is currently underway and is scheduled for completion in 2019. This phase will include the construction of a new Rainforest of The Americas Exhibit, as well as an updated Children’s Zoo.
