Sutter Cemetery in Sutter

A Brief History of Sutter Cemetery

Nestled in the small town of Sutter, California, Sutter Cemetery is a picturesque final resting place for many of the area’s residents. Though it may seem like a peaceful and serene place now, the cemetery has a long and sometimes tumultuous history. Here’s a brief look at some of the highlights.

The cemetery was established in 1852, making it one of the oldest in the state of California. It was originally owned and operated by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal organization. In the early days, the cemetery was little more than a potter’s field, where the poor and indigent were buried.

That all changed in 1880, when the city of Sutter decided to take over ownership of the cemetery. The city immediately set about improving conditions at the cemetery, planting trees and shrubs, and installing a irrigation system. A caretaker’s cottage was also built on site.

Over the years, the cemetery has undergone several changes. In 1937, a concrete wall was built around the perimeter to replace the wooden fence that had been there previously. In 1963, an auxiliary chapel was added to provide a place for funeral services to be held. And in 1971, a mausoleum was constructed to provide above-ground burial options for those who desired them.

Despite all these changes, one thing has remained constant: Sutter Cemetery is still a beautiful and peaceful place, where loved ones can come to remember and reflect on those who have gone before them.

Sutter Cemetery may not be as well-known as some of California’s other historic cemeteries—such as San Francisco’s Laurel Hill Cemetery or Los Angeles’ Hollywood Forever Cemetery—but it nonetheless has an interesting history worth exploring. If you find yourself in Sutter, take some time to stroll through this lovely spot and pay your respects to those who have gone before us.
