Ellis Lake forms part of the Feather River Watershed and is located just east of Marysville, California. The lake itself covers approximately 1,200 acres and is fed by several creeks, including Dry Creek. Ellis Lake is a popular spot for fishing, boating, and swimming. There are also several hiking trails located around the perimeter of the lake.
The history of Ellis Lake goes back centuries. The Maidu and Nisenan Native Americans were the first people to settle in the area and used the lake as a source of food and water. The first non-native settlers arrived in the 1850s during the California Gold Rush. The town of Ellis was founded shortly thereafter and was named after one of the settlers, Samuel Ellis.
In 1955, construction began on the dam that would create Ellis Lake. The dam was completed in 1958 and created a reservoir that now serves as a key part of California’s water supply system. In addition to providing drinking water for local communities, Ellis Lake also provides irrigation water for nearby farms.
